Marketing public space a new challenge

Sandton Tourism Association (STA) has formalised its relationship with Sandton Central Management District to launch a combined marketing committee that will focus on planned growth, developing infrastructure, urban planning and an urban art program.

STA was formed five years ago and is the longest serving private sector tourism association in Johannesburg. Through its existing relationship with Alexandra Tourism Business Association it represents almost 70 role players in the hospitality and tourism industry. Its broad mandate is to promote the greater Sandton area as a business tourism destination.

The role of Sandton Central Management District, launched in June 2004, is the marketing, servicing and protection of public space within its boundaries. Commercial property owners, who make up the membership of Sandton Central Management District, fund all initiatives with the aim of sustaining and increasing their property values.

Each organisation has nominated several people to form a combined marketing committee. At its first meeting, held this week, the committee identified the following board objectives:

  • To promote Sandton as the preferred business tourism destination through encouraging local, national and international visitors to "enjoy another day".
  • To recognise and capitalise on the "richest square mile" in South Africa while continuing to promote tourism in Alexandra.
  • To market Sandton as the hub through which other areas/activities can be accessed.
  • To continue to market the area in conjunction with the relevant public sector tourism organisations.

The immediate efforts of the combined marketing committee will focus on planned growth, developing infrastructure, urban planning (to create a pedestrian environment), and an urban art program.
