The Star HRD Expo 2012: CareerWeb/ITWEB Salary Survey

The Star HRD Expo 2012 - one of the largest, most extensive HR, education and training exhibitions in South Africa - is set to take place from 09 - 11 October 2012, at the Sandton Convention Centre, Johannesburg. This premier event provides the sole opportunity for learning providers and other consulting and employment agencies, top companies, SETAs, government departments and other stakeholders to come together, under one roof, to network and showcase their commitment and services in accelerating skills development in the country.
The Star HRD Expo 2012: CareerWeb/ITWEB Salary Survey

This year (2012), CareerWeb, a division of ITWeb, will be exhibiting in order to engage with principal HR, Education and Training Professionals. CareerWeb / ITWeb releases an annual IT Salary Survey, which is now in its 13th year. The 2011 CareerWeb/ITWeb Salary Survey results are hosted on www.itweb.co.za, with the headline sponsor of the survey being Deloitte. As the only survey to capture data directly from South African IT professionals, the results serve as a guide to provide a general snapshot of the SA IT landscape.

The data, as garnered from 3,226 permanently employed individuals, was cleaned and analysed by survey partner, 21st Century Pay Solutions Group, a specialists remuneration consultancy.

    The respondents:

    • Participants included IT professionals, IT business managers and business owners from across SA, from small to large companies. The vast majority of respondents live in Gauteng, followed by the Western Cape. The largest area of work was software development and programming, followed by network infrastructure and processes
    • Over 80 percent of respondents were male; 52 percent were white, and more than half were between the ages of 25 and 35 years

    Top take-outs from the survey:

      The grass is always greener:
    • 35 percent of respondents love their jobs, but 58 percent are keeping a lookout for something new
    • As with the previous year, 18 percent of respondents are considering leaving SA, mostly because of career prospects and career growth opportunities, but also due to concerns over crime and violence in the country. The choice areas for immigration include Europe, the UK, Australia and the US

      Job satisfaction:

    • The results of the survey showed that the majority of respondents feel either happy with or neutral about their jobs. While only 16 percent admit to being unhappy, most respondents are on the hunt for new positions
    • This may be due, in part, to the fact that 41 percent of respondents feel their salaries are not competitive. Just over half the respondents believe their salaries to be competitive or very competitive - a 9 percent drop since the previous year
    • Thirty percent of respondents cited "Want to earn more money," as their primary reason for leaving a company, followed by "Want to work on new / more challenging technology"
    • In terms of what makes respondents happy in their jobs, remuneration is an important factor. It is not the most important, however. It falls under quality of management, career prospects and, the factor deemed most important, the challenge of the job

Please sir, I want some more:

    • Just less than three quarters of respondents received a salary increase in the last year. The majority of these increases were between 4 and 10 percent

      Demographics:

    • On average, women are still earning less than men across all levels: strategic, operational and staff
    • Results indicate that the province of Gauteng pays the best, while salaries in Limpopo are the lowest

      Highest to lowest:

    • In the majority of cases; more experience equates to a higher salary
    • In general, the higher the level of education, the higher the salary. There is a marked difference in the salaries of those who have undergraduate degrees vs. those who attended technical college or technikon
    • The survey analysed salaries within three job levels: strategic, operational and staff. At the strategic level, the three top-paid job types were CEO / MD / President, then CFO / FD and then CIO
    • According to the survey, the top-paid niche areas of IT are: document management and imaging, enterprise architecture and SOA, ERP and project management, e-billing, and supply chain management
    • Support/helpdesk respondents report earning the least, followed by desktop management / services, Web design, Web services and call centre management
