Creative Circle results for August 2009

The Creative Circles results for August 2009 are in and, says judging panel chair Alistair King of KingJames, while “[c]onspiracy theorists might love to point out the Cape Town bias in the results... trust me, if there didn't have to be a winner in each category I can assure you this panel wouldn't have selected much at all. It was simply a post-Loerie pre-Eagle/One show slump.”

GeneralI wish I could wax lyrical about the great standard of the entries this month and the worthiness of the winners, but sadly I can't. With one or two exceptions, the work was abysmal and the panel really battled to identify a deserving winner in some categories: the phrase “my vote is under duress” became the mantra of the day, and with the largest category only having 11 entries, it was slim pickings. On a positive note the pub was open by 3.30pm. It really was a short and unsatisfying affair as far as judging goes.

For what it's worth, here are the winners - I'll leave it to you guys to decide what's deserving or not. But we did battle to identify three winners in each category worth putting forward to Ad of the Year.

I do, however, wish to make one point regarding the rules. It is very clear that the rules are being used more as a guideline, with some work being entered way after its first flight date and other work entered in a size that doesn't resemble any known magazine format. The size issue was a hot subject at Loerie judging, and I will press the Creative Circle to either take a firm stance on this or free it up so that everyone can be judged equally.
NewspaperMuch to my embarrassment, King James CT took first place for Allan Gray Ltd Kids (with long headlines) campaign Soccer/Sea Monkeys/Karate. Runner up was Net#work CT with its MIO/GPS Campaign Here to there/Taxing to relaxing/Foe to Friend. There was no worthy third place.
MagazineSome beautiful illustration work for Cadbury/Bournville Deliciously Dark Thoughts campaign gave Ogilvy Jhb First place. Runner up was Lowe Bull Jhb with a single print ad for Unilever SA/Skip Wardrobe.
OutdoorSome beautiful illustration by Am I collective (I believe?) made Saatchi CT's poster campaign for Novartis/Mebucaine Mouth of Horrors the winner in this category. King James CT was runner-up with its Allan Gray Ltd outdoor and poster Kids campaign Golf/Tennis/Piano/Guitar. Again, there was no worthy third place.
TV/cinemaCongratulations to Fox P2 for Sampro/Rediscover Dairy. The panel, however, pulled one ad out of the campaign (Chicken) as the winner as they felt that the other two were considerably weaker. The runner-up was a nice little piece of retail for Ackermans by Net#work CT called Playsuits. There was no worthy third place.
RadioWithout doubt the worst category of the lot with only a winner being selected. Congratulations Net#work CT for its Associated Magazine/Marie Claire Nude.
