Hannes Oosthuizen to steer Car

Only the seventh editor in Car magazine's 53 years, Hannes Oosthuizen takes over from John Bentley from November 2010. Bentley will be involved in other strategic areas of the brand going forward, but will work closely with Oosthuizen in the coming weeks to ensure a smooth transition.

According to Car publisher Neil Piper, the position of Car editor was one of the most sought-after in local publishing and a rigorous screening process had been followed before "the best candidate and the best man for the job" was selected.

Says Piper, "Hannes is a highly respected individual in the motoring world and is currently the only South African on the 'World CAR of the Year' judging panel. He has a clear understanding of Car's ethos and heritage and is very well placed to ensure that the brand continues to dominate as the worlds of print, web and mobile media continue to converge and new platforms enter the consumer landscape."

Oosthuizen's fascination with cars began early on. He acquired his first Car magazine at the age of seven - the first in his collection - and studied journalism with a view to becoming a motoring journalist, a wish that was fulfilled when he joined the magazine as a staff writer in 2001. He was made associate editor the following year and was promoted to deputy editor in 2006.

"Car magazine ignited my passion for both cars AND magazines, so to be put in charge of this prestigious publication represents coming full circle for me," Oosthuizen comments. "My intention is to build on Car's respected position as the authority on motoring matters in South Africa, and to increase the excitement and entertainment levels, across all our platforms."
