AdReview Awards 2003 - Winners

Tony Koenderman's first annual AdReview Awards were presented in Johannesburg's Melrose Arch on 6 May 2003. TBWA Hunt Lascaris won the Agency of the Year and FCB South Africa won Campaign of the Year. Other winners include: VWV Group, MediaCompete, FCB Cape Town, KingJames, Blueprint Strategic Marketing Communications, The Old Shanghai Firecracker Factory and HerdBuoys McCann-Erickson.

The awards were presented at the launch of "Tony Koenderman's AdReview", a new annual published in association with Finance Week, and in an Afrikaans version with Finansies & Tegniek. Its aim is to provide a comprehensive source document for the advertising and marketing industry.

The top two trophies, the Pinnacle Award for the overall Agency of the Year, and The Big Idea Award went to TBWA Hunt Lascaris.

The Agency of the Year was chosen for its ability to combine billings growth, creative achievement and business development. TBWA Hunt Lascaris was the country's leading winner of creative awards last year, and the group won an astonishing amount of new business. The agency also impressed by its implementation and refinement of a new strategy of the TBWA global network. This strategy combines a methodology called "disruption" (a way of breaking away from convention to produce new creative ideas), and a technique called "connections planning" which expresses the idea across a number of different communications channels.

These methodologies were used to develop the Sea Harvest campaign, which builds on the real-life story of the urbanization of the penguins of Boulders Beach, Cape Town.

Around this the agency has spun a whimsical myth about a bunch of renegade penguins who will do anything to get their flippers on a pack of Sea Harvest products.

The Pinnacle Award was sponsored by Media24 Magazines, and The Big Idea was sponsored by Paarl Web.

Marketing Services Company of the Year (sponsored by Universal Print Group): VWV Group.

Advertising Personality of the Year (sponsored by Clickrite digital printers): Nkenke Kekana, chairman of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Communications, for his role in the Parliamentary examination of racism in advertising.

Media Agency of the Year (sponsored by Ads24): MediaCompete.

Agency of the Year – Senior (fee and commission revenue exceeding R50 million): TBWA Hunt Lascaris.

Agency of the Year – Intermediate (revenue R25m-R50m); FCB Cape Town.

Agency of the Year – Transitional (revenue under R25m): KingJames.

Newcomer of the Year: Blueprint Strategic Marketing Communications.

Lifetime Achievement Awards: Matthew Bull, Mike Schalit.

Campaign of the Year: Vodacom 4U campaign. (agency, FCB South Africa).

Event of the Year: Business Trust Long Run (agency, The Old Shanghai Firecracker Factory).

Agency Achievement Award (for business turnaround): HerdBuoys McCann-Erickson.
