Kings of the castle

'Neptune's Castle,' described as South Africa's largest sandcastle, was created by local sculptors and Durban residents Promise Mthembu and Sasha Ngidi on Salt Rock beach, KwaZulu-Natal as part of Total's family summer programme.

The sculpture, a celebration of the province and its rich marine life, used 12 tons of sand, is just over two metres in height and spans 20 square metres of beach. It took two days of preparation and sand sorting before sculpting could take place. Ngidi and Mthembu also hosted sandcastle-building workshops.

"To include the whole family"

The family campaign was also complemented with a full inland edutainment programme at the National Zoological Gardens in Pretoria.

"All our activities were created to include the whole family," says Total South Africa marketing manager, Reina Cullinan. "The zoo's programme focused on conservation and family leisure with the sandcastle building programme showcasing one of holidaying's most enjoyed beach pastimes."

Ngidi and Mthembu are self-taught professionals who have been plying their trade along the KwaZulu-Natal coast for some time. Both sculptors have become a local institution.
