Taking HIV/AIDS beyond the classroom

SABC Education's programme "Beyond The Classroom" is challenging all schools in South Africa to start a project that addresses any aspect of HIV/AIDS and its impact on their school and/or community. The school with the most effective HIV/AIDS project will win R10 000 for resources they need. Ingrid Bruynse, SABC's Editor of Formal Learning commented, "We hope that this competition will stimulate many projects that have a positive impact in communities around the country. Selected finalists' projects will be filmed and included in later episodes of "Beyond The Classroom".

Criteria will include the school's assessment of the affect of HIV/AIDS in their school and/or community, and the relevance of the project they have decided to do to address some or all of those issues.

There are no limits to the form the project can take - they could start peer counseling, fundraising for AIDS charities or organisations, homework help for children who have families devastated by AIDS, or introduce an HIV/AIDS awareness programme into the curriculum - the choice is the schools!

SABC Education's Beyond The Classroom broadcasts every Sunday at 12:30 and Tuesday mornings at 10 on
SABC 1.
