MPowerFM moves into Highveld territory

Mpumalanga radio station MPowerFM has established a new studio in eMalahleni (Witbank) and recently went on air from Ridge Casino. Commenting on Friday, 24 July 2009, on the new lineup and plans, newly appointed MD Kevin Savage stated, “The new studio in eMalahleni will allow us to win a similar market share and fan-base in the fast growing Highveld region."

He added, “MPowerFM spent its first year of broadcasting concentrating on entrenching itself as the dominant adult contemporary station in Mpumalanga's sub-tropical heartland in the Lowveld in the Lowveld.”

The establishment of the new studio, which is integrated into the revamped casino, includes an additional brand partnership with the neighbouring Highveld Mall. The new studio officially went on-air on 13 July - at the same time that Savage implemented changes to the DJ lineup.

The new DJ list features the return of favourites and fresh new voices. Desire Mahlunga reunites with the team to do the late afternoon drive from eMalahleni, as does Buyi Shongwe, who hosts the Saturday afternoon show from Witbank. Hugh Prior, better known as Q, presents the late-brunch show on weekdays and the well-known afternoon drive-time team, David Watts and Samantha Jagger, will be taking listeners home during the weekdays.

According to Savage, developments include the launch of the Top 40 countdown on Saturday mornings with Miguel Proenca (Top Jock winner 2008) and the MPowerFM Vodacom Top Jock Search, which will kick off on Monday 27 July. First auditions are planned to take place in eMalahleni on 15 August and entry forms will be available at the new studio premises.

Other tweaks include a fresher, more contemporary music lineup with fewer repetitions, new jingles and distinctive lifestyle features aimed specifically at the market within Mpumalanga.
