I ART JOBURG well under-way

Five world-renowned artists will paint six large-scale murals as an ode to Johannesburg this September and October. I ART JOBURG, presented by adidas originals, will have 540 litres of paint donated by Plascon to support the project.

"As a local company with a 120-year history and a deep-rooted heritage in South Africa, the company is consistently striving for product innovation. So it only made sense for us to take part in the celebration of creativity and originality that these artists are promoting across South Africa," says Lauren Shantall, PR and communications manager at Plascon.

Having started in 2011, with the I ART WOODSTOCK and I ART SOWETO community art projects, which gave local artists a platform, I ART JOBURG has a distinctly international flavour. It showcases murals by Steve 'ESPO' Powers (New York), Remed (Madrid) and Roa (Belgium), who will work alongside local artists Cameron Platter (Durban) and Falko (Cape Town), offering the project a distinctly eclectic and diverse signature. Renowned international street culture photographer Martha Cooper will document the project.

A truly modern African city

It will concentrate and focus its activities in downtown Johannesburg - specifically the Maboneng Precinct - on the east side of the city.

"Johannesburg is a truly modern African city with inspiring energy and diverse cultures. Local and international artists was hosted over the course of one month in September to create large-scale murals in the heart of the city, inspired by Joburg," says Ricky-Lee Gordon, co-founder of A Word Of Art. "By creating these murals we want to celebrate Joburg, bringing international attention to its raw beauty and people."

The exhibition will be open to the public from 5 October to 5 December 2012 at AREA 3, 20 Kruger Street, Maboneng Precinct. Visitors are welcome to join guided I ART JOBURG Walks curated by Gordon, also known as artist Freddy Sam, on 6, 13 and 20 October 2012.
