Sappi PICA Awards 2003 - Winners

At a glittering awards ceremony on Thursday night, 30 October 2003, the winners of the Sappi Magazine Publishers Association of SA PICA Awards were revealed. The event brought together 650 guests to join in the celebration of publishing & print.

The PICA Awards are awarded to publications that exhibit the mark of publishing excellence, and at the same time, deliver the goods to their respective markets. The Pica-winning publications serve as a benchmark for excellence and set the standard for others to follow.

Judges were drawn from magazine publishers, readers in the primary industries, professions and specialist consumer sectors. Over 170 judges met over a two-week period to judge the local publications within the 44 sectors.

"Each year the competition gets tougher and the standards of publishing excellence are raised. This year was no exception," says Gisele Wertheim-Aymes, chairperson of the Magazine Publishers Association of SA. "While striving to raise the standards of our own magazines we remain committed to publishing excellence on an on-going basis." Wertheim-Aymes adds that although already recognised and respected around the world, she believes the continued improvement in local publishing standards means South African magazine compare favourably to leading publications available globally."

Major sponsor of the awards, Sappi Fine Papers Managing Director, Albert Lubbe, added "Over the years we have seen a tremendous growth of support for this event, and how proudly publications display their PICA's. It gives us great pleasure to be part of the Pica Awards, as they are the industries highest accolade for publishing excellence."
