Double scoop for Cape Town events

The Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour and Cape Times FNB Big Walk are as synonymous with the Mother City as Table Mountain or the Waterfront. Both events have been nominated for the prestigious Marketing Federation of Southern Africa Marketing Organisation/Company of the Year award.

The Cape Times FNB Big Walk that took place last Sunday, drew more than 21 500 entries and celebrates its centenary in 2003. The Cape Argus Pick 'n Pay Cycle Tour is the world's largest timed cycling event and is currently the only sporting event in the country that is oversubscribed. A total of 35 000 cycling enthusiasts from throughout Africa and even from as far a field as Vietnam and the United Arab Emirates will be flocking to the starting line on Sunday, 16 March 2003.

"The events have a direct socio economic impact on the local economy," said Alec Lenferna, Event Manager of both events.

"This year alone the Cycle Tour boosted the Western Cape coffers by more than R200-million. For us it has been a double scoop - both events that are managed by the Events Office have been honoured with nominations. It's actually quite amusing, not only are we competing against two other formidable events, the Old Mutual Two Oceans Marathon and the First African in Space Project, but we are also in competition with ourselves," Alec said.

Entries are judged based on the strategies, implementation and results achieved, market share and growth as well as the influence on Southern Africa, Africa and globally.

The final awards ceremony will take place at the House of JC le Roux tomorrow.
