Each year, Big Blue looks for designs that typify the current local trends and influences and also challenge the norms. The aim of the annual ‘Makhulu Polane' competition is to discover new, South African talent and this year's entries were very representative of South Africa's rich design and illustration talents.
Four hundred and fifty designs were received and the top 30 selected designs are currently being showcased at www.bigblue.co.za.
Gerrit's ‘Bunny Chow' design was selected as the ultimate winner as it takes a uniquely South African concept to a new, modern iconic level. The simplicity and boldness of the design means it will translate well onto t-shirts.
Special mention goes to two other designs: ‘Boobotie' by Sulet Jansen and Boere Karate: RPK 69 by Chris Louw were also very close contenders.
For the third year in a row, the Makhulu Polane campaign was publicised using only online social media channels. Strong editorial featured in local art, design and branding blogs, a growing Facebook presence and dedicated YouTube, Zoopy and Flickr presences worked as part of a strategic social media strategy that boosted the hype and community contact.
