For your daily dose of comic relief

As cellular operators worldwide prepare to deliver movies and TV programmes to users via cellphones, content providers are hard at work producing the visual material to supply the demand. Here in South Africa, Ja! Productions went live this week with the first of a series of Proudly SA comedy sketches downloadable to cellphones or PCs.

All of SA's favourite characters can be seen in their favourite spot, playing the national sport: on the couch watching TV. What comes out of their mouths is pure, unadulterated "Twac". Written by top comedians and comic writers, and with actors including James Borthwick and David Clatworthy, Kaseran Pillay and Jack Devnerain, and Kate Normington and Brenda Ngxoli, the Twac Couch series brings comedy in bite-size pieces to anyone with a compatible handset, anywhere, anytime.

Desperate Couch Wives

There's Willy and Arno, who are 40-something sports fanatics, husbands, fathers and philosophers having a midlife crisis. These guys are the Kings of the Couch. With a beer glued to one hand and the remote in the other, they solve the world's problems. Ricky and Dev are cousins who run the family funeral business together, that is, when they are not arguing about ethics, politics, sport and women. They are the Rajahs on the Sofa. The Desperate Couch Wives gil and gossip over their soaps, clutching a gin and tonic.

And there's much more Twac where that came from...all the 2 - 3 minute sketches are original and written by, among others, Jonathan Pienaar, Krijay Govender, Paul Slabolepszy, Andrew Wilson, Henrietta Gryffenberg, Leeanda Reddy, Thomas Hall, James Borthwick and David Clatworthy.

Three new sketches will be available each week.

Non-linear approach

Electronic media production company Ja! Productions is using both WAP and web technology, as well as mobile entertainment services provided by the networks. Johan Reyneke, one of the directors of Ja! Productions, explains, "The next generation is not accustomed to a linear approach to entertainment. They see whatever they want, whenever they want - they either 'DVD it' or 'PVR it'.

"If they want to watch Grey's Anatomy at ten in the morning, then they can. One has to understand that mobility and accessibility becomes the challenge for broadcasting and this opens up a whole new door for the industry - providing content for mobile TV."

Ja! Productions was founded by Reyneke, Iske van den Berg, Ilse van Hemert and Zane Meas.

Free Twac episodes are available on the Vodafone Live preview channel and on the Yebo1 and Yebo2 channels. They can be purchased on the entertainment/comedy channel. Otherwise, go to the www.twac.co.za and watch the episodes free on your PC or laptop. A Vodafone (or 3G-enabled cellphone) or a PC with Media Player and speakers is required.
