Woolworths, MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet to give kids life-changing operations

This Christmas, as part of the Smile for Life campaign, Woolworths and MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet have teamed up with Operation Smile South Africa, a MyVillage beneficiary, to give 100 children born with cleft palates or cleft lips life-changing operations.

They're aiming to donate an additional R500,000 to Operation Smile SA this festive season, raised by customers swiping their MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet or linked Woolies cards every time they shop between 31 October and 25 December 2013.

If you'd like to contribute to Operation Smile SA and add another feel-good favourite to your playlist, you can download our Christmas track, a remake of James Brown's I Feel Good by the Soweto Gospel Choir, from iTunes for R8.99. Simply search "Woolies Feel Good". Alternatively, you can SMS Feel Good to 38537. Each SMS download costs R10. All proceeds will go towards Operation Smile SA. In addition, your Christmas shopping won't just delight your friends and family - every time you swipe your MySchool MyVillage MyPlanet card over the festive period, a percentage of your purchase will go towards the initiative, without any extra cost to you.

Children are usually ostracised

Braam Malherbe, Operation Smile SA ambassador said: "Due to the unfortunate disfigurements caused by cleft palates and lips, children are usually ostracised in their social environments. They face ridicule as the condition is not understood. This often prevents them from going to school and forming healthy relationships or finding employment as adults. The good news is that cleft lip repairs can take as little as 45 minutes to change a child's life and future forever. Please Do One Thing (DOT) and help a child to smile."

Operation Smile SA has performed over 4500 free re-constructive procedures for children in a number of African countries to date. The team has just returned from Rwanda and will be in Nelspruit in mid-November with the hope to give 100 children a chance to eat, drink and speak properly for the first time, thanks to the funding raised from Woolworths Christmas campaign last year.
