5FM programme manager goes to jail

5FM will be mentoring DJs from Pollsmoor prison's Radio Truth today, sharing skills on music compiling and programming, as well as donating CDS to the fledgling station's music archives.

Commented programme manager Nick Grubb, who has volunteered to spend the day at the prison station with the DJ's and management: "I have never been to jail before, but am happy to be doing so under these circumstances. I look forward to sharing some of our knowledge and listening to some new radio talent."

Radio Truth has 12 DJs who are inmates from the four divisions of the prison (ladies, juvenile, medium D and maximum) and broadcasts three to four days a week, six hours a day from 4pm - 10pm. Started 4 years ago by Marius Boaden from The Prison Broadcasting Network, Radio truth now broadcasts to all 8000 inmates.

Explained Boaden, "Without the South African radio community's involvement, whatever we do in Pollsmoor will be wasted. This is a morale booster for future on air presenters, inside the prison and when they get back into the real world."
