Touring through the heart and soul of Jozi

On Valentine's Day last weel, Kaya FM asked media agencies out on a date to tour the inner city of Johannesburg, involving them in an informative dialogue about the history of the city and its culture and allowing them to understand the city's rejuvenation process and identify business opportunities.

The express tour also covered the history of mining, fashion and trading districts in Jozi.

Kaya FM partnered with Neil Fraser of Neil Fraser & Associates, an urban consultancy dedicated at revitalising and regenerating the inner city of Joburg, to create a relationship marketing exercise aimed at introducing clients and media agencies to Kaya FM and the cultural district of Newtown.

The express tour of Jozi began at the Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown, with Fraser taking everybody through the history of the area and explaining the significance of the area named after Mary Fitzgerald.

Insight

Fraser gave insight into the thinking behind changes and developments taking place in the CBD and explained how Johannesburg was meeting its challenges.

Tourists on the Joburg express tour were also taken through to Kwa Mai Mai, a traditional medicine market on the corner of Berea and Anderson streets, and then on to Constitutional Hill.

“Kaya embraces and reflects the verve of the city; we are a part of the Newtown community which is a cultural hub. We see ourselves playing a leading role in redefining Johannesburg, meaning that we see the station as having a key role in assisting to drive the physical transformation of the city, as well as the transformation of mindsets about the city,” says Mark Mdlela, marketing manager for Kaya FM.

According to Mdlela, “the Nelson Mandela Bridge represents a powerful symbol for the inner city – named after a great leader who was instrumental in bridging the gaps between South Africans through his spirit of forgiveness and reconciliation. Kaya FM also leads the way by inviting leaders in business to ‘cross the bridge' and discover a rejuvenating city that is in rich in history, one that is worth investing in and more importantly one they can truly be proud of.”
