Support International Rhino Day, 22 September 2011

South Africa and the world mark the second International Rhino Day on 22 September, celebrating everyone involved in protecting rhinos. According to World Wildlife Fund (WWF), SA Chief Executive Morné du Plessis "they are true heroes and we salute them".

Du Plessis added that rhino security work on the ground - supported by the WWF - is crucial "the courageous work of our rhino heroes needs to be backed up by work at other levels. This includes making sure those guilty of rhino crimes do not walk free on technicalities and that the punishment fits the crime", he said.

As South African officials conduct rigorous prosecutions and impose stricter sentences, the WWF is calling for a corresponding commitment from Asian countries "where the illegal demand for rhino horn drives poachers," said du Plessis
