He is described as South Africa's most controversial and popular cartoonist. His provocative cartoons have sparked the ire of President Jacob Zuma, who claimed that the "Lady Justice" cartoon impugned his dignity and reputation and also claimed damages of R4m (later reduced to R100,000 before the case was dropped). Zapiro actively supports freedom of speech and expression and has tangled with Zuma's spokesperson Mac Maharaj and Higher Education Minister Blade Nzimande on these issues.
His newest book is entitled But Will It Stand UP In Court and features Brett Murray's "The Spear" on the cover.
