Iziko hosts Youth Day programme for students

On Youth Day, Monday 16 June 2014, Iziko Museums of South Africa will welcome learners from three local community organisations to participate in an exciting and interactive youth programme at the Iziko South African Museum.

Learners from Equal Education, African Jam and Al Noor Orphanage will participate in the programme created under the theme, 'Youth celebrating 20 Years of Democracy: remembering the power of the youth of 1976'. The program will feature discussions, guided tours, workshops, and films screenings. Young people, particularly first-time voters, will have the opportunity to collectively engage, reflect and find solutions to any challenges they face post the institution of democracy in 1994.

In commemorating the bravery of the youth of 1976, the program utilises the 'Singing Freedom' and Mandela exhibitions as a point of departure for creating youth access to museum collections, thus helping them to understand young people's meaning of freedom in South Africa in our 20th year of democracy. The program aims to create awareness amongst the youth, encouraging them to reclaim their power and place in society, and thus act as ambassadors for social change.

Furthermore, national Youth day at Iziko will be a day for the current generation of youth to reflect on the past but also build for the collective future and visitors will have free access to its sites.
