Fashion weaker for MTN's exit

Organisers of Durban Fashion Week have had to postpone the event after its key sponsor, MTN, pulled out.

Now they are trying to find the cash to ensure a “scaled-down” version of the event, normally held in June, goes ahead “later” this year.

Durban Fashion week bosses Vanashree Singh and Dr Precious Moloi Motsepe said they were in talks with other potential sponsors.

VShe Promotions, a co-founder of the event, is owned and directed by Singh, wife of movie mogul, Anant Singh.

Singh said they knew the cellphone company did not intend renewing its sponsorship, and that the event might be held in mid-September or October.

Anthony Garstang, MTN's senior manager of sponsorships and events marketing, said the company decided last year to “exit the fashion space” and concentrate on other sponsorships in “football, music, cycling and cricket”.

Janet Welch, operations manager for VShe Promotions, said the Durban Fashion Week Organisation was still determined that the “important business platform for fashion designers” would continue.
