SA kids choose their favourite stars

On Saturday, 30 November 2002 at Sandton Convention Centre, it became clear whom the kids of South Africa consider as stars.

At the Star-In-You Kids Choice Awards children between 7 and 13 years old were asked to vote for their favourite stars in a number of categories, such as books, films, pop groups, clothing brands, and sport stars.

List of winners included:

1 Benni McCarthy won the Favourite Local Sport Star (Soccer)
2. Bob Skinstad won the Favourite Local Sport Star (Rugby)
3. Penny Heyns won the Favourite International Sport Star (Swimming)
4. David Beckham won the Favourite International Sport Star
5. 5FM STEREO won the Favourite Radio Station
6. DJ Fresh won the Favourite DJ
7. Jackie Chan won the Favourite Actor
8. Britney Spears won the Favourite Actress
9. Nike won the Favourite Sport Clothing Brand
10. Harry Potter won the Favourite Book
11. You Magazine won the Favourite Magazine
12. Danny K won the Favourite Pop Star & Group
13. Jennifer Lopez won the Favourite International Pop Star & Group
14. Sewende Laan won the Favourite Local TV Soap
15. Mr Bones won the Favourite Movie
16. Spur won the Favourite Eating Out Place awards
17. Mr Price won the Favourite Fashion Store
18 Bad Boy/Bad Girl won the Favourite Fashion Label
Jonty Rhodes outdone everyone as he received two awards, first for Favourite Sports Star (Cricket) and another award for Most Admired South African.

The five charities which shared the Favourite Charity award were, Nelson Mandela's Children Fund, SPCA, Cotlands, SOS Village and Reach for A Dream Foundation.

Non-voting categories included:

Lifetime achievement Award was awarded to Mr Nelson Mandela
Honorary Inspiration Award was awarded to the late Nkosi Johnson
Honorary Inspirational Award was awarded to Natalie du Toit
Star School Award was awarded to Meredale Primary School
Star Principal Award was awarded to Mr Ashraf Dawood
Star Teacher Award was awarded Mrs Bathabile Serei
Star Wishes for South Africa were presented to the representatives from the president's office.
