A new Dawn in employee empowerment

The case for pursuing formal qualification and career development opportunities through virtual education is gathering momentum in business says Teryl Schroenn, CEO at Accsys, a national provider of HR and payroll management software.

Learners such as Dawn Hattingh, a recently appointed Human Resources Practitioner in a large enterprise, continue to offer feedback that confirms the extent to which online teaching experience has boosted their job situations.

Hattingh is responsible for the Gauteng region within the target market of her company and directly oversees three units. Her duties involve attending disciplinary hearings, interviews and other core HR functions at each unit. She believes she owes this latest development in her career to the e-Learning course and its host, Accsys, the developer of the first online payroll qualification available in Africa.

“I started the course in September 2006. I wanted to know more about payroll and not simply do something because ‘this is the way the company has always been doing it'. I wanted to know why, and be able to answer employees' questions with facts and not offer explanations like ‘this is the way the system calculates it'. I wanted to double check if something was indeed calculated correctly,” she explains.

Her first experience of virtual or online education reaffirmed her decision to embark on this course. In particular, she enjoyed being able to log on when it suited her.

Schroenn believes the industry is only scratching the surface of what can be achieved through e-Learning and is confident the user base will grow extensively as more employees transfer the benefit of tuition and knowledge into the organisations and companies they represent.

”It is clear that companies do see the value of investing in flexible, effective and continuous learning that is not limited by conventional constraints like distance, travel, language, space, resources, culture and other influences. The power of this methodology lies in the immediacy of the skills development,” she says.
