"This book brings South Africans together in a new way and to those who visit our shores it does far more to explain who we are and how we live than a thousand guide books." ~ Archbishop Desmond Tutu

African Salad is the product of a series of recipe-collecting journeys around the country by Cape Town photographer Stan Engelbrecht - the idea of publisher Stephan le Roux. Each recipe appears with photographs of its creator, his/her family and home. Together with text derived from audio recordings made during each house visit and additional interviews conducted by writer Tamsen de Beer, the recipes provide real insight into the lives of a range of everyday South Africans.

African Salad purports to be a recipe book. Indeed, it features the favourite dishes of 60 SA families in a typical recipe format. But food, family and the concept of home are inextricably bound together in African Salad. Be it potjiekos, boerbrood, or traditional African beer, these recipes are a key to understanding who people are and where they have come from.

"African Salad is a remarkable tribute to South Africans that, in my opinion, is the most beautifully crafted, original piece of work ever to be published in this country." ~ Kate Wilson, Editor, Marie Claire

African Salad is published by Day One, an independent publishing company founded by Le Roux and Engelbrecht. The book also features original illustrations by award-winning illustrator Ree Treweek.

African Salad is a prize possession for anyone who lives in, loves, or has an interest in the Real South Africa. It is a superb idea for end-of-year gifts for international and local clients. "The book of the moment." ~ Matthew Krouse, Mail & Guardian
