Co-operation agreement between Icasa and The Competition Commission

The Competition Commission and the Independent Communications Authority of SA have signed a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA).

The agreement details how the two bodies will co-operate in respect of the investigation, evaluation and analysis of mergers and acquisitions, and complaints involving telecommunicaion and broadcasting matters.

Input from various parties, primarily from the telecommunications industry, was taken into consideration before the agreement was signed. A joint working committee, of members of both the Competition Commission and Icasa is to be established.

The Competition Commission and Icasa will continue to make independent determinations on the basis of the criteria and mandates of their respective legislation.

Says Mandla Langa, Icasa chairman, "Both regulators look forward to working together on competition matters in the telecommunications and broadcasting industries."

The agreement details are still to be gazetted for public information.
