Keep cops in the dark on SA roads

Can more traffic officers on night shift make a dent in the country's after-dark road fatality rate? The KwaZulu-Natal transport department and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) believe they can.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation 2014/15 annual report shows that more than 4,500 people died on the roads in that period. Transport MEC Willies Mchunu told the KwaZuluNatal legislature that 37 deaths in just four accidents since July had occurred between 6pm and 6am, and "necessitated an increased focus of law enforcement at night".

The MEC's spokesman, Kwanele Ncalane, said yesterday the department had already deployed more traffic officers to monitor accident hotspots at night. "We have started more operations at night ... it is not an everyday thing, but we want it to be."

In Johannesburg, JMPD chief superintendent Wayne Minnaar said the accident rate definitely increased after dark over weekends. "To address the problem the JMPD has roadblocks over the weekend, with an average of 250 people arrested for drunk driving at night at weekends. "If we did not have these roadblocks, the accident rate would be a lot higher."

Forensic collision homicide reconstruction expert Stan Bezuidenhout said many jurisdictions did not have night duty officers. "Speed enforcement has all but stopped at night because it is a risk to traffic officers, because of the risk of attack and hijacking."
