SA's fuel cell industry may become a lucrative business

The South African Department of Mineral Resources and Department of Science and Technology have been working closely with Ballard Power, a leading manufacturer of hydrogen fuel cells, and Anglo Platinum, a processor of platinum-metal groups, to investigate the possible uses of hydrogen fuel cells.
SA's fuel cell industry may become a lucrative business

Hydrogen Fuel News reports that the country hopes to - eventually - supply 25% of the world's fuel cells demand.

South Africa is home to the majority of the world's platinum resources. Because of this, hydrogen fuel cells are becoming quite popular in the country, as fuel cells generate electricity through electrochemical reactions. These are made possible using platinum catalysts in order to separate hydrogen, oxygen, and - crucially - hydrogen molecules. Because hydrogen molecules are used to produce electricity, a South African fuel cell industry could become a lucrative business.

According to Hydrogen Fuel News, Ballard is currently working on bolstering the country's fuel cell manufacturing capabilities and is expecting to see results within the next year.
