This year's challenge to learners in grades 8, 9 and 10 is to build a working model of a low cost structure that is environmentally friendly and of value to the economy. The structure will need to include at least three of the following elements: a solar geyser; natural ambient heating and cooling methods; water conserving methods; an inexpensive alarm system; using eco-friendly materials; withstand natural disasters or ensure minimal injury during disasters; utilising recycled materials; energy saving lighting; sanitation.
"The number of entries has grown exponentially since the inception of the competition. More importantly, the quality of entries never ceases to impress us," says Amanda Nair, CEO of Blue IQ.
The competition is open to grade 8, 9 or 10 learners in Gauteng. Learners participate in groups of five and groups may consist of mixed grades. The entry process is managed by the Gauteng Department of Education's (GDE) district officials, who set their own dates for the regional competitions. Teachers and principals should contact GDE officials for entry forms.
The winning projects will be judged in accordance with the GDE prescribed rubric, ensuring that the competition supports the curriculum. Winners in SYM 2012 stand to win the highest cash purse since the inception of the competition, with prizes valued at R375 000. While the first, second and third place winners will receive R45 000, R30 000 and R15 000 respectively, this year's competition offers greater incentives for top achievers. All entries that make it to regional finals will receive a prize.
Dimension Data will interview five SYM finalists as candidates for their successful Saturday School. Those learners who are accepted into the school could stand a chance of winning a fully funded tertiary education bursary.
Competition entrants will also be enrolled in the Blue IQ subsidiary, The Innovation Hub's incubator programme action plan, the Yearning, Learning and Earning Incubator Programme (YLEIP). This programme includes training and skills development in entrepreneurship, business plan development and exposure to industry. As in the past, any feasible ideas from the learners will be developed though The Innovation Hub.
In addition to their cash prizes, the category winners will become part of the Smart Young Mindz Alumni Association. "The Alumni Association exposes past winners to activities and is a platform to discuss issues and share ideas on current matters, careers and innovations. It also allows the competition partners to keep track of the member's academic performance at school and beyond and it serves to provide mentorship to former winners," says Nair.
