Why Waldorf works

We care.
We care about your child as a human being.
Why Waldorf works

  • Small classes mean lots of individual attention, but we want children to understand how to relate to their class, school and community too.

  • Our classes are run on Rudolf Steiner’s principles. Our curriculum addresses each developmental stage of your child. This whole-person education means that we teach children to use their hands, hearts and heads.

  • Our curriculum is rich in languages, mathematics and the sciences. Our results are really competitive. But we teach collaboration and community-mindedness too. We understand that art, music and story are the foundations of human culture, and we think they ought to be foregrounded in good education.

  • Waldorf schools enable the critical or free thinking – creative problem-solving – that is absolutely essential in the African and global context. Knowing the stories of ourselves and our communities is vital for our psychological well-being now. And being able to use our imaginations is key for our future decisions.

  • If your family plans to travel, a Waldorf education offers a seamless integration into international tertiary education – or just a safe move into a Waldorf school in another country.

We care about social justice.

  • Imhoff Waldorf School was founded in 1996 in response to the fall of apartheid. We are independent, and we receive no state funding.

  • We know that children from all backgrounds should interact so that they can be part of a normalisation process in South Africa. Waldorf Education produces active agents of change in the world because we show each other how to transform, and how to be flexible and resilient.

  • Good education is for everyone, and we include previously disadvantaged students from Masiphumelele, Kommetjie and Ocean View through our Sponsorship Programme that financially supports the tuition of students – at least two in every class.

We care about the environment.

  • We are an eco-school, located in a forest – the last bit of green space near The Table Mountain National Park. The valley is rapidly urbanising, and we know that preserving this ‘green lung’ for all the surrounding communities is a necessity, not a luxury.

  • We have solar power and our own borehole, recycle, and are part of many other environmental initiatives.

  • We are dedicated to preserving the rare and indigenous plant species on our land.

  • We use environmental best practice in all our construction.

  • We advocate for reconciliation ecology – inventing, establishing and maintaining new habitats to conserve species diversity in places where people live, work and play. And that’s something that Steiner schools have been doing for a century!
