LMAO C.O.M.E @ Zula Bar

If you don't know by now, Zula Bar on Long Street, Cape Street holds a comedy evening every Monday with some top-class acts providing you with a few laughs to get rid of those start of the week blues. On 14 July, Zula had on show Stuart Taylor, who played host for the evening, opening slots featured Christopher, Martin Kintu, Nazeer Jaffer, Tracy Clarks and Milo. The headlining performance was none other than extreme nut-job Cokey Falkow.

The show started promptly at 9pm which is a record for Zula that has a rep for tardiness. Stuart Taylor recieved a fairly warm reception from the audience. He was off to a good start until (*da da dum*) he picked on some guy studying hospitality management. Tensions mounted as Taylor apologised (we were hoping for a Monday night bar brawl but nothing came of it) and the guy told him to bugger off and let the real comedians take the stage.

Personally, I think you should always, when attending comedy shows, pack an extra thick skin because comedy just ain't comedy if someone from the audience takes offence. Chill guys, it's not a debate forum on the validity of your diploma from CPUT, it's comedy, laugh it off and move on. So anyway, Taylor introduces the first act of the evening, Christopher.

Christopher who? I don't know, as no one bothered to mention his surname, so Christopher it is. He was funny. Only reason I say so is cos' I do remember he didn't completely suck (Note to self: make notes next time).

Next up was Marty Kintu, the self-proclaimed Oreo who has a bone to pick with Nabisco for creating vanilla Oreos and confusing him altogether. This oddly accented brother who can't speak any of the 11 official national languages is a laugh-a-minute.

Nazeer (Naseer?) Jaffer took to the stage next. The poor thing was a nervous wreck and while his material may have been funny, it was lost in the crowd sympathising with his nervousness. (It is the name of the game I'm afraid; perhaps have a shooter or two to calm the nerves next time. Oooh, that may not go down too well if it's against your religion. Perhaps picture the audience naked; not the best idea if your gran's there though. Sorry, I'm rambling on in brackets again.)

On that note, next up was the animated self-proclaimed mother of all Jews, Tracy Clarks. The woman is real funny, ranting on about being a Jew and PMS (i.e pre-, present- and post-menstrual symptoms; no, it's not a myth). Her kids and their lift club gathered front and centre and she got them giggling and blushing and wanting to hide under the tables. Moms are great aren't they…

Milo, another comedian we were introduced to on a first name or stage name basis, was hilarious. His set was packed with dry one-liners that, will have your sides splitting.

The next 30mins was dedicated to Cokey Falkow, the Durban-born, porn-obsessed surfer/comedian who has been cracking audiences up since…ummm…checked on the site, nothing there. Well, let's just say for years already. He did this absolute cracker of a skit. He wondered what it would be like if you could be paralysed from the neck up. The face you get stuck with is the one just before the accident actually happens. Check the odd looking pics on the Comedy Club website and you will see the face he was pulling. Falkow's the sort of dirty comedy you wouldn't expose your 10-year olds to in fear of them turning out like the kids from South Park and no one wants a little Cartman running around.

A good Monday night altogether at Zula Bar.
