Marie Claire awards local fashion

Marie Claire Prix d'Excellence de la Mode South Africa was launched in 2007 and, after a two-year break, it is back with a new focus on the fashion retail industry and the role it has played in supporting local design and the business of fashion.

The 2010 awards were made in Johannesburg on Tuesday 14 September 2010 and released in the October issue, out yesterday 16 September.

These awards honour the best in local and international fashion design and this year included new categories to honour the contribution the retail industry is making in local fashion. In the retail section, the winners were judged on the percentage of local production and product in store, marketing of designers, any young designer mentorship programmes or initiatives they have inaugurated and any extra motivation supplied. The winning local designers were selected based not only on creativity and sustainability but on the illustrated growth they have shown in the past year.
