Vodacom continues beach cleaning campaign

Vodacom, in partnership with local municipalities, will once again be running its Vodacom Beach Clean Up campaign, which will coincide with the busy holiday period from 15 December, 2010, to 7 January, 2011.

"The Vodacom Beach Clean Up campaign is a demonstration of our commitment to the principles of sustainability and of being a responsible corporate citizen. We have a commitment to our customers, communities and the environment to conserve it as best we can for future generations. Thus, we are pleased to be a part of the valuable efforts of the local municipalities in keeping our beaches clean during this important period," commented Suraya Hamdulay, executive head of Vodacom Corporate Citizenship.

She added: "The Vodacom Beach Clean Up campaign aims to improve tourists' experiences, make the coastal areas safer and cleaner for both beach-goers and marine animals alike, provide employment opportunities for previously unemployed individuals and to boost the coastal economy during the festive season."

Aims to change behaviour

The campaign seeks to supplement the work of the local municipalities during this key period when there is an increased demand for the service. In addition, Vodacom also aims to raise awareness about the importance of clean beaches and to change behaviour by encouraging members of the public to use
the bins provided and to "reduce, reuse and recycle" litter.

In the Western Cape, Vodacom cleaners will be working at Strand, Mnandi, Muizenberg, Hout Bay, Camps Bay and Bloubergstrand. Other beaches include Clark Bay, Willard, Westbrook, Umdloti, Addington, Scottburgh, Margate and South Beach in KwaZulu-Natal. In the Eastern Cape, the selected beaches are Orient, Esplanade, East Beach, Wells Estate, Port St. Johns, Jeffreys Bay, Hartenbos and Diaz beach.
