The funtastic staging of Bill Solly and Donald Ward's smash hit musical Boy Meets Boy is a light-hearted story (set in the 1930s) of mistaken identities and a romance between two men, culminating in their marriage. Boy Meets Boy had a five-star revival in the West End in November last year and is now directed by Teddy Davis with flair and pizzazz, and sassy musical direction by Kurt Haupt with choreography by Roxy Levy.
It tells the zany story of two gay men: Casey O'Brien (Lloyd Kandlin) and Guy Rose (Marcel Engelbrecht), who question getting married after being subjected to some very funny farcical situations that are solved by their straight friend Andrew (Darryl Spijkers).
Engelbrecht is perfectly cast as the innocent object of affection of the obsessive Clarence Cutler, an over-the-top and bitchy millionaire and "camp toast of society"; with Kandlin in top form as Rose's dream man. Brian Winter sizzles as Clarence Cutler, taking his role to extreme joviality, with Michelle Galloway making a welcome return in her double roles as Lady Rose and Josephine de la Rose - a lead performer in Les Follies de Paris.
Although Boy Meets Boy deals with relevant and topical social issues, it never takes itself too seriously, walking a tightrope between super-camp and giddy playfulness.Boy Meets boy is a musical that anybody can enjoy without being offended. It turns frowns upside down and allows us to journey merrily into a world where anything goes, and most definitely does. It's one of those totally unimaginable experiences that delivers what it promises, and much more, with passion and fervour.
It will be interesting to see what the wedding between Frank 'n Furter and his creature will be like in the latest version of The Rocky Horror Show; at the moment it's all hush on the Transylvanian front until the first previews.
Boy Meets Boy offers a great evening out and will definitely warm up the winter blues. If you are looking for a fun evening out with lots of laughs, look no further.
