Programme for 2013 Cape Town International Summer Music Festival announced

The Cape Philharmonic Orchestra kicks off 2013 with the 7th annual Cape Town Summer Music Festival. The seven performances feature a range of local and international musicians playing music by Rachmaninov, Prokofiev, Chopin, Gershwin, Vaughn Williams, Vivaldi, Verdi, and more.

Thursday 7 February (8pm, City Hall)
The first festival symphony concert is conducted by Martin Panteleev and features soloists Arlene Jaftha (soprano), Violina Anguelov (mezzo), Derick Ellis (tenor), and Monde Masimini (bass) with the New Apostolic Church Choir:

  • Requiem by Verdi

Saturday 9 February (7.30pm, City Hall)

The youth celebration concert features the CPO's two orchestra ensembles (Brandon Philips conducting the Cape Town Youth Orchestra and Sean Kierman conducting the Cape Town Youth Wind Ensemble) and Masidlale String Project's performing shorter orchestral works. The concert will conclude with a mass orchestra consisting of both youth orchestras and the CPO.

Sunday 10 February (8pm, City Hall)

Len van Zyl, who believes that the development of young talent is a vital part of keeping classical music alive and well, created a financial trust to support and develop classical music talent in South Africa. The final round of the competition features three aspiring conductors and the CPO:

  • Leonore Overture No. 3 Op 72a by Beethoven
  • Les Preludes Symphonic Poem No. 3 by Liszt
  • Scherzo Capriccioso Op.66 by Dvorak
  • Khachaturian Piano Concerto (soloist Sulayman Human)

Thursday 14 February (8pm, City Hall)

The second festival symphony concert is conducted by Victor Yampolsky and features pianist Yulianna Avdeeva (Gold medallist at the International Chopin Piano Competition) as soloist:

  • Symphonic Variations by Franck
  • Piano Concerto No. 2 in E minor Op. 21 by Chopin
  • Symphonic Dances Op. 45 by Rachmaninov

Saturday 16 February (8pm, City Hall)

The World Orchestra Festival Concert is conducted by Josep Vincent and features musicians from 54 countries. Managed by East-West Music, the orchestra uses the medium of music not only to entertain, but also as a communicator of ideas and a platform to spread the social involvement of the young members of the orchestra.

  • Adagietto from Symphony No. 5 by Mahler
  • Partita Africana by Hendrik Hofmeyr
  • Romeo and Juliet (Second Suite and Tybalt's Death) by Prokofiev

Sunday 17 February (3.30pm, Parow's Hugo Lambrechts Auditorium)

The festival chamber ensemble concert is conducted by Hans Huyssen and features Stefan Temmingh as soloist:

  • World Premiere of a new recorder concerto by Hendrik Hofmeyr
  • Concerto for Flautino in C major (RV443) by Vivaldi
  • Concerto for Recorder in C major (TWV 51:C1) by Telemann

Thursday 21 February (8pm, City Hall)

The third festival symphony concert is conducted by Martin Panteleev and features violinist Philippe Graffin and soprano Friedel Mitas (with the St George's Singers) as soloists:

  • An American in Paris by Gershwin
  • Violin Concerto No. 1 Op. 15 by Britten
  • Symphony No. 7 (Sinfonia Antarctica) by Vaughn Williams

Sunday 24 February (5.30pm, Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens)

The final festival concert is conducted by Martin Panteleev and features violinist Philippe Graffin as soloist:

  • William Tell Overture by Rossini
  • Violin Concerto in E minor Op. 64 by Mendelssohn
  • Romeo and Juliet Fantasy Overture by Tchaikovsky
  • Finlandia by Sibelius
