The Insatiables at Theatre on the Bay

Tim Plewman and Jonathan Rands have collaborated for the first time on a new South African production, “The Insatiables”, co-authored and starring the two veteran performers. The play premiered at the National Arts Festival in Grahamstown and went on to win the “Best Comedy Play” award at the 2008 South African comedy awards.

Drawing on their vast experience in the theatre, Plewman and Rands have crafted a taut web of laughter and suspense, threaded with questions about ethics and morality. The result is theatre entertainment of the highest order.

In their latest middle years two school friends find themselves competing for the same position as CEO of a reputable company. Matthew Earl Jones (Rands) and Simon Bowl (Plewman) face off in a Sleuth-like dance of covert succession plans, false co-operation and one-upmanship. It seems that both of them will go to any length to reach the top of the corporate ladder. It is a riveting modern day battle for supremacy. Fueled by an insatiable drive to win at all costs, their weapons are ingenious scams, shady deals and broken promises. Confronted by the excessive rivalry between the two, a young therapist Melissa, played by Capetonian Adrienne Pearce, tries to understand what lies at the heart of corruption: greed or need? Who is responsible and are they redeemable?

The play offers a fresh insight into white collar crime in our country. Underneath the twists and turns of a brilliant plot and cleverly crafted comedy, lies the thin line between power and corruption, ambition and revenge, the need to win and the need to dominate. These ingredients make for a richly engaging and multi-layered evening in the theatre.

The Insatiables is directed by Clare Stopford and runs Tuesdays to Saturdays at Theatre on the Bay in Camps Bay from 13th May to 6th June. Tickets cost from R90 to R125 via 021 438 3301 or Computicket. ends
