Adams & Adams identifies Vuka U'zenzele Primary School for CSI initiative

Adams & Adams has identified the Vuka'Uzenzele Primary School near Mamelodi as its major CSI initiative. It will identify the schools' needs on an annual basis and address them to the best of its ability.

"The aim of the relationship is to support the school's basic learning needs, in so doing creating an environment that is conducive to learning, as well as establishing a happy and secure space for the learners," said Nicky Garnett , head of the CSI group of Adams & Adams.

Adams & Adams has also identified the need for remedial teaching as a major necessity - one of the significant drivers to success at the school.

"Many learners who attend school live in foster homes, have sick parents or live with their elderly grandparents; others come from child-headed households. Learners may also live in an abusive environment that is not conducive to creating a learning environment," said Garnett.

Starting a remedial programme

Accordingly, Adams & Adams is starting a remedial programme with the school at the beginning of 2013. "The firm will sponsor two teachers on a Saturday morning and our staff will also attend as volunteers to facilitate the teachers in giving remedial work to those students who are struggling with their schoolwork. We will have two groups, one for Grades 1 to 3 and another for Grades 4 to 6. Materials such as paper, pens, crayons and art equipment will be provided and a snack will also be given on the day. So far 100 children have indicated their interest in the programme."

The firm is also running a "Vuka Buka" book drive to collect books for the school's library. "Some employees have been giving monthly donations from their salaries for the project while others will simply purchase a book from the Travelling Bookshop when it visits our offices at the end of November. The books will be presented to the school in January before the start of the 2013 school year."
