Previously, Habitat for Humanity merely provided housing for under-resourced communities. Since the beginning of 2013 Habitat has shifted its focus from building houses to working more holistically and in partnership with communities through their nine step process to community development.

Last year and during the first half of 2015 have seen the fruits of Habitat's strategic coming to the fore 18 months into its implementation with the first steps to long-term sustainability taking place. Partnerships have been built and sustained, small businesses have opened and are flourishing, and members of the community are taking control of their environment by forming governing bodies and associations to manage and organise their communities.

Sustainable future

Through Habitat's people, public/private partnerships and placing the people at the front and centre of effecting change with their communities, communities are able to create their own sustainable future.

"The power of our broadened strategic direction is immense as its outcomes reach further into the future than where simply providing houses did. Through skills training, leadership development and instilling the value of self-belief, we are helping to create a South Africa that is responsible for its own future," said Adrienne Burke, Habitat's marketing manager.

"Through the new look, easy to navigate website, we hope that it helps demonstrate the work we do in building communities and in the process ignite the desire amongst South Africans to join us in helping to build communities across South Africa," Burke concluded.
