Schools get football kit from Sony

The first of 16 schools received their branded football kit, active education training for physical education teachers and FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009 participation certificates last week, as part of Sony Ericsson's FIFA Flag Bearer programme.

Skeen Primary, Eastbank Primary, Boekenhout Primary, Eldocrest Primary and Observatory Primary Schools based in Johannesburg, were the first of many schools to be visited by Sony Ericsson and Active Education representatives for the official handover.

Benefits beyond Confederations Cup

“Being active is such an important part of a young child's school years as it is necessary for school readiness, social skill and academic development,” said Sonja Shear, head of marketing for Sony Ericsson Southern Africa.

“To illustrate Sony Ericsson's long-term commitment to football and to the community, we developed a sustainability programme that would continue to benefit these schools way beyond the FIFA Confederations Cup.”

Three children were selected from each school through a literacy competition where they had to create their own soccer cartoon and one person was selected through a ball skills competition judged by partners Let's Play and Active Education. The winning children were whisked off for their official FIFA responsibility, to carry the FIFA flag onto the football pitch at the FIFA Confederations Cup South Africa 2009.
