Limpopo govt to honour female farmers

Limpopo Premier Cassel Mathale will later this week name the province's best female farmers and farm workers.

The annual Female Entrepreneur of the Year Awards will be held at Bolivia Lodge outside Polokwane, on Wednesday, 11 August 2010.

"This year marks the 11th anniversary of the annual competition which has been instrumental in transforming the sector and introducing women to commercial agriculture," said spokesperson for the provincial Department of Agriculture, Kenny Mathivha.

He said awards will be given to the Best Worker, Best Young Farmer as well as top producers in four categories, namely subsistence, smallholder, commercial and export markets.

"Being a tool of empowering women in the male dominated sectors, the awards will for the first time acknowledge the best female worker," said Mathivha.

The national Department of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries initiated the awards, previously known as the Female Farmer of the Year, in 1999 to empower women in agriculture by recognising their contributions and increasing their visibility.

The national leg of the competition will be held in Port Elizabeth in the Eastern Cape later this month.
