NWU continues impressive performance in rankings

The North-West University (NWU) has cemented its place among the cream of the crop of local and international universities in various global rankings in 2021 and is continuing its impressive ranking performance this year.

Times Higher Education (THE) Young University Rankings has placed the NWU third overall in South Africa and 124th internationally on its ranking of the world’s best universities that are 50 years old or younger. The NWU was placed third overall in South Africa in this ranking in 2021 too.

The 2022 list was published on 15 February. It is the third time that the NWU has appeared in this particular ranking.

The Young University Rankings include universities from various countries and use 13 performance indicators to evaluate them. These performance indicators are grouped into five areas: teaching (the learning environment); research (volume, income and reputation); citations (research influence); international outlook (staff, students and research); and industry income (knowledge transfer). The weightings are recalibrated from the THE’s other rankings to reflect the profile and mission of young universities.

The THE Young University Rankings follow on the heels of a new ranking by the Informatics Institute at the Middle East Technical University in Turkey. This ranking, the University Ranking by Academic Performance (URAP), was published on 2 February 2022.

The URAP ranking system focuses on academic quality and employs multiple criteria that focus on academic performance to determine a specific university’s ranking.

It placed the NWU among the top seven local universities and globally in the 886th place.
