Introducing a world’s first from SA’s local whisky brand: Three Ships 15 Year Old Pinotage Cask Finish. From launching South Africa’s first whisky brand to producing the country’s first single malt, Three Ships Whisky has always defied convention by doing things differently, and this new offering is more interesting than ever.
Launched as part of the Master’s Collection, the new product needed to have the premium look and feel of a collector’s item and an exterior that matches the premium intrinsic. As a world first, it really needs to ‘wow’ visually. Just Design applied their usual energy and expertise. The result is regal and intriguing, just like the whisky. Design features include premium coated paper stock, foil and high-build finishes, as well as details like embossing and debossing on the box. Three Ships is a pioneering spirit and this new design proves that the brand keeps finding new ways to be innovative, inside and out.
Honouring the passionate stewardship of Master Distiller, Andy Watts, who continually experiments with cask finishes, single malts and new blend expressions – the new Pinotage Cask Whisky is already becoming a legend that has whisky drinkers, connoisseurs and collectors clamoring for more. Says Watts: “The idea first came to me in the early 2000s but back then our industry was still very young and the world wasn’t quite ready to accept such innovation from South Africa. I had never let go of my dream. This moment of being able to stand with the finished product in my hand is, in 25 years as a master distiller, truly the pinnacle of my career.”
Pinotage is the uniquely South African wine cultivar cloned in 1925 by Abraham Izak Perold. The wine casks impart the typical Pinotage varietal character of red berry fruit and a slight earthiness to the whisky, which softens the malt component and compliments the sweetness of the grain.
With only 3500 bottles of the 4000 bottles available for purchase by the public, Three Ships Pinotage Cask Whisky launched in October 2016. The first 500 bottles were made available on the website and sold out on the first day. There are only a few remaining bottles available from selected retailers, on www.vinoteque.co.za, at The James Sedgwick Distillery and from Big Five Duty-Free stores; priced at around R1500 a bottle, while stocks last. Soon, it will only be found in coveted collections.

About Three Ships brand
Three Ships has celebrated many firsts, including South Africa’s first single malt whisky. It is produced at The James Sedgwick Distillery, which has been dedicated to mastery for nearly 13 decades. As Africa's first dedicated distillery, it went from humble beginnings in 1886 to a state-of-the art operation, which facilitates the entire whisky making process. A true demonstration of why different is worth doing.
