Deep care is the holy grail of client management
As the Cannes festival closed last month, a number of people summed up hot topics from the now five-day-long event. From all the summaries, 'trust' came up as the most consistent. This discussion is not new but it has a different meaning this time around at Cannes. There's a renewed sense in understanding the link between creativity and business, and therefore, the importance of a platform like Cannes to spotlight that. What's most interesting for me is how that conversation filters down and impacts day-to-day functions within an agency set-up. 11 Jul 2019 Read more

Indoni: Empowering black women in marketing and communications
The men versus women narrative in the workplace, while over-debated, still needs talking about simply because we have yet to find an equilibrium between genders. In South Africa, women, especially black women, are often the sole providers and sole carers in a household and have very little in the way of support structures. The pressure to manage a career while often being the provider and caregiver to young children and older relatives, is immense. But success at work means an increased focus on work, and time and energy are limited. So, it follows that increased focus on their jobs necessitates the presence of support structures both inside and outside of her place of employment. Supporting them adequately requires a renegotiation of working environments, and in effect, the way society is placed. 4 Oct 2018 Read more

AI: Fears will fade, opportunities will surface
It's 1492 and the printing press is starting to gain traction. This bothers a very select group of people very much. Monks, who had for hundreds of years been painstakingly copying out the scriptures word for word, are about to be replaced. A monk named Johannes Trithemius goes as far as writing an essay espousing the moral superiority of handwriting, claiming that handwritten books would last far longer than their printed counterparts. But nothing can stop the march of progress, and the printing press goes on to revolutionise the way we share information. Today, books are a cultural cornerstone, and monks are enjoying a lot more free time. It all worked out in the end. 15 Mar 2018 Read more

Frank talk: Rethinking value in agency-client relationships
Frankly, the current way of working between marketing agencies and clients is in a state of flux and we are not sure what's coming next. We have seen this before, but this time it's different. We know that for marketing agencies, adding value is no longer a price nor capability consideration - those are basics that should always be right. It's now about genuinely understanding the way people are consuming information and adopting a structure that enables this understanding. Social media is often seen as the poor cousin in most digital agencies. Resources are expended on the big campaigns, while the little 'mundane' events are left to the smaller less experienced social teams. Often under-processed and over-utilised, these teams are required to push out well-designed and copy-written content on a weekly basis with barely any involvement from more experienced staff. The sweatshop nature of such productions means that quality is often sacrificed in favour of quantity. 11 Aug 2015 Read more
