Who we are

Brandon de Kock
Brandon's career has been a 'compendium of games' - a collection of roles and responsibilities in industries as diverse as hospitality, music and art, to eventing, conferencing, research and publishing. He is a highly respected writer, photographer and public speaker; and was editor of Compleat Golfer magazine for eight years before taking up the position of creative and content director for RamsayMedia (Getaway, CAR, etc.) where his strategic thought-leadership skills added value and insight across all spheres of business from marketing and product quality to service activities and delivery. In 2013, he was selected to be a member of the curatorial panel for the Cape Town World Design Capital 2013 programme. He brings all this experience to bear in the context of WhyFive, finding the stories in the numbers and presenting them like great rock songs. |

I’ve always been intrigued by people: what they feel, what they think, what they need. Especially as consumers. And few things satisfy me more than collaborating with like-minded people to make great things happen. So I couldn’t have landed in a better space, working in the world of consumer insights based on landscape surveys that tell beautiful stories about human behaviour. I spent a number of years in media sales, got into the marketing game for some interesting brands and later had the unique opportunity to get my head around GIS geospatial research, understanding the consumer quite literally down to the ground (a strategic gamechanger)…and now I stitch it all together! |

These days you can measure someone’s impact on the world by the number of WhatsApp pings their passing generates. And I’ve been replying to the most extraordinary messages non-stop for two days. Not vacuous platitudes either, but real words, from the heart, about lessons learned, lives enriched and moments shared.
Personally, Stu and I rode shotgun for each other for decades, literally, and what an extraordinary joyride it’s been. He was the Excel spreadsheet behind my PowerPoint presos: the show director standing proudly in the wings at curtain call, delighted for me to take the applause. What a partner. What a mensch.
And on the business side, we can take comfort in the fact that, in WhyFive and BrandMapp, he achieved his ambition of creating something mighty useful and valuable to the media and marketing world he loved so much. And making it bigger and more robust than both of us.
So we’ll keep going onward and upwards, carpe-ing every diem with his memory lighting the way, but knowing that whenever we celebrate a victory, there will always be a spare set of chopsticks at the sushi bar. |
