Hearings into Cele allegations today

The board of inquiry, led by Judge Jake Moloi, alongside advocates Terry Motau and Anthea Platt, is expected to establish the fitness of Cele for the office of National Commissioner or his capacity for the execution of his duties efficiently. This is in relation to the procurement of office accommodation for the South African Police Service in Pretoria and Durban, as part of the findings and recommendations of the Public Protector Thuli Madonsela.

Last year, Madonsela found that Cele may have had a hand in unlawful leases signed for police office space in both Pretoria and Durban worth R1.7bn.

In November last year President Jacob Zuma announced the establishment of the board of inquiry to probe the allegations.

The board's spokesperson, Bongiwe Gambu, said the hearings would start at 10am and were expected to end at 4pm daily.

Cele is expected to be represented by his counsel while there will be witnesses and cross-examinations during the course of the hearings.
