In celebration of the Total AFCON 2019, Total wanted to create more opportunities for youth to participate in grassroots soccer. “We have seen the impact that getting involved in sport can have in terms of keeping a child in school and off the streets,” says Cullinan.

Total South Africa has partnered up with 32 schools across the country and run a nation-wide schools tournament in the run-up to the Total AFCON 2019. The initiative has been a huge success. So much so that Total is planning on extending it to eight more schools in Gauteng.

In 2016, Total signed an eight-year agreement with the Confederation of African Football which saw the group named the title sponsor of 10 competitions - three of which are inter-club and seven of which are national. “Through this partnership, we are also driving the continued development of the beautiful game in local communities,” says Cullinan. “Being involved in these communities has always been extremely important to us and we always encourage our dealers to get involved in their local communities, in whatever ways they can.”

It has been said that “not every victory shows up on the scoreboard,” and Total South Africa supports this.

The company believes sport is about more than who wins and who loses. It is about uniting people and building a better future. “This is why we are so exceptionally proud to be the official sponsors of football in Africa and of the Total Africa Cup of Nations 2019,” says Total South Africa’s Corporate Communications and Marketing Manager, Reina Cullinan. “This continent is part of who we are and an important anchor for our global presence. Through our work to promote and grow Africa’s most popular sport, we are helping to create more cohesive, more sustainable communities here.”

From a corporate perspective, the Total Group has been involved in a number of sport related sponsorships across the globe and according to Cullinan, the AFCON sponsorship is the single largest sponsorship within the group.
