Safety and security top priority for venues

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world, falling under the top five countries for violent crimes, according to the United Nations. Most of these crimes occur while victims are enjoying leisure activities, as they are not as alert as usual. This is why it is imperative for exhibition and events venues to prioritise safety and security, not only for visitors, but also for organisers and staff.

South Africa has one of the highest crime rates in the world and most of these crimes occur while victims are enjoying leisure activities and not as alert as usual. This is why safety and security should take priority at exhibition and events venues.

At Gallagher Convention Centre, the safety of customers, employees and suppliers are placed first. The venue has a 25 member security team with a strong daily presence. To ensure that there is absolute compliance to achieve 'best practice in safety' throughout the venue, the team increases to 40 members, depending on event requirements.

Enforce Security is officially contracted to Gallagher and with a site manager reporting to Gallagher management on daily operations. The company has many years of experience in the security industry, having been service providers for various large companies and corporate clients in several countries in Africa.

"A typical day for the security team starts at 5:45 with an inspection parade. The teams are divided into different shifts to ensure that the staff are not overworked and always ready to provide top security for each event. On the job training is provided, as well as basic security skills training," says Adolf Venter, Chief Executive of Gallagher. "We have the right technologies in place, including CCTV at strategic spots and communication is enhanced with radios and cell phones."

The site manager collaborates with other security teams and companies who act on behalf of the venue's customers. "This is especially true when VVIP's visit Gallagher, in which case clearance or accreditation of the staff of other security companies who need to work on our premises is required," explains Venter.

He says that the same set of rules applies to everyone entering or leaving the premises. "This is a large venue with many buildings, gardens, tenants, guests, contractors and employees. Vehicles are checked, including those of senior Gallagher executives, and cooperation sets a very good example."

Concludes Venter: "The security teams are especially alert when events are hosted and they are always briefed as to the nature of the event and who will be attending."
