What Mrs Gauteng has learned during the Covid-19 pandemic

"As cliché as it may sound, do not wait to act on your plans. Do not procrastinate," these are the words of Nsika Nkosi who was crowned Mrs Gauteng 2020 in September 2019. Two months into her reign, Nsika started rolling out some of her Mrs Gauteng projects. Little did she know when she started working on her projects, that the year 2020 would be an unprecedented year and later discovered that starting was a good call.

In November 2019, Nkosi led a Teddy Bear Charity Drive for the adorable little patients at the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Parktown. She garnered support from her colleagues and church community to make the project happen.

In December 2019, again with the assistance of her colleagues, she donated Steri Stumpie milkshakes to the Mother of Peace Children’s Home in Northriding. During the month of February 2020, Nkosi and her church mates spread some love in one of the women’s shelters for abused women in Johannesburg, at which Nkosi gave a motivational talk. Her teammates donated clothes, prepared lunch and delivered sanitary towels.

The second lesson that Nkosi would like to point out, is that charity projects should always be relevant. For example, during these times of Covid-19, she saw it fit to have fabric masks made for any children’s institution that may be in need. People responded on her Facebook page when she needed suggestions on where to donate the masks to and that is how they ended up at Retshepisitwe Creche in Tshiawelo, Soweto.

Nkosi’s sense of social responsibility cannot be contained and this can be seen in what she did for Mandela Day this year. She partnered with MAC Water Technologies to raise funds to donate to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital. This was a strategic partnership as MAC Water’s company objective is to ensure wise use and preservation of the world’s water resources - which is another issue of interest to the current Mrs Gauteng. As we speak of washing hands during this pandemic, have we paused to think about those who do not have clean running water and how they are getting their hands washed?

Nkosi closes off by mentioning that even during this pandemic, we need to continue taking care of each other, take care of our friends, families and support NGOs that look after vulnerable groups while observing lockdown rules and regulations. She adds that we are all leaders in our own right and wherever we identify gaps in our communities, we need to take a stand to make a difference.
