First bauma Africa expo a success

According to Business Monitor International's South African Mining Report, the decline in South Africa's mining sector is set to end as several projects across Southern Africa are expected to commence in the next five years. Africa's mining sector value is expected to grow by an annual average rate of 0.6% from US$32.1bn in 2012 to US$33.1bn in 2017.

If the interest around the first ever bauma Africa, the International Trade Fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines and construction vehicles is anything to go by, South Africa's mining sector just could be on the mend.

bauma Africa, which was recently held at the Gallagher Convention Centre north of Johannesburg, was brought to South Africa by global exhibition organiser Messe München International (MMI) with the infrastructure supplied and produced by South African company GL events Oasys. bauma Africa offered a brand new platform for the mining industry to demonstrate new advances in construction technology within the sector.

New dimension

"The announcement of bauma Africa 2013 is strategic for the country and allows for a new dimension in the industry. The erection of bauma Africa has taken us 15 months of hard work and we are honoured to be a role player in making the first ever bauma Africa possible," said GL events Oasys' Mark Strydom.

Elaine Crewe, CEO for MMI South Africa and for bauma Africa says: "The exhibition strongly supports the South African announcements of major investments in infrastructure projects amounting to several hundred billion Rand over the next ten years."

Originally the exhibition was expected to attract around 200 exhibitors, but exceeded all expectations with over 750 exhibitors occupying over 60,000m2 of space. Exhibiting companies included Bell, Doka, Doosan, ELB Equipment, Form-Scaff, Hyuandai, Kleeman Gmbh, Kormann RTockster, LiuGong, Normet Oy, Pilot Curshtec International, Recycler Gmbh, Sandvink Mining and Construction, Sany, Shantui and Wacker Neuson.
